July 2018 Meeting Recap

At the July 11th meeting, CLA members brought unfinished artwork for artist Sheila Parsons (l) to critique. She offered many fine suggestions to improve the many “in progress” works that members brought to the meeting.
Thank you, Sheila!

Sue Duvall Show at Surgery Center
You’ve just GOT to go by the Surgery Center (make a special trip) to see Sue DuVall’s exhibit that will be hanging until the first week in August. Absolutely lovely pieces! She is showing the original artwork that she did for the ABUN group on Facebook (Artists and Biologists Unite for Nature). Click here to see pictures from Virginia Potter Vredeveld’s Facebook post on the CLA Group page.

Just a Friendly Reminder – Art of the Month Guidelines
July 2018
Conway League of Artists places artworks in several businesses and public places around town in an effort to make art a part of our community and to make CLA more visible to the public. Members in good standing are encouraged to bring a piece of their art to the meetings to be voted on by those in attendance. The artwork receiving the most votes will be featured in the next newsletter and on the CLA website that month. If not enough pieces are available to fill easels, all will be used and some may be displayed from the previous month’s artwork. Artwork will be delivered to the easels then picked up and returned to the artist at the next meeting by a CLA officer.
Currently we have 6 places for 2D art and none for any 3D pieces. Easels are at Conway Chamber of Commerce, First Security Banks on Front Street and the main bank on the Old Morrilton Highway, Arvest Bank on Oak Street, and the Faulkner County Library A & B. The artwork to be displayed in each location is chosen by the easel used there, according to what size will safely fit the artwork, for instance, very small pieces will likely be placed at First Security Bank downtown or at the library while larger pieces more likely will be placed at Conway Chamber of Commerce, Arvest Bank or the library. Exhibitors are responsible for any sales. Art must be family friendly and will not be voted upon if it isn’t.
Sizes are limited to no larger than 22×28 or half sheet watercolor. All work must be framed unless gallery wrapped canvas is used and all work must be properly wired with screw eyes or D rings for hanging. Artwork must have ID cards attached to the back and the front of the work listing: Title, medium used or Photograph, Name of Artist, Price or NFS, and Contact information. No unusually heavy or elaborate frames accepted because our easels are light weight. No artwork will be placed on the floors of these businesses nor can artists provide their own easel.
Neither the Conway League of Artists, the business displaying the artwork nor anyone else is responsible for loss or damage. A photograph will be taken of artwork being displayed to be used on social media or other publicity events. By participating in the Art of the Month placement program you agree to these guidelines.

ADD YOUR INFORMATION TO THE WEB

Our list is growing! If you haven’t yet done so, please contribute information about yourself and your art to the Online CLA Member Directory! Promote your work, your online presence, and let others know how to contact you.
Click here to add your information to the CLA online directory. It’s quick, easy, and fairly painless! (Your information will be reviewed for editing before it is posted.)

Dusty Higgins is a sequential and digital artist.  He is also an award winning magazine newspaper cartoonist and illustrator.  He is an art instructor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. Dusty’s earliest recollection of being an artist was in 2nd grade when he was  scolded for drawing on his class work. From that point forward he knew his passion was art.  He has spent many years being a digital artist.  The fundamentals of art are still used with the computer but it saves a lot more time for mass producing sequential art.  He shared two of his books he illustrated.  The first was Pinocchio, it is a graphic novel for teens.  The second is Miles Taylor Golden Cape, this book is great for the reader that loves graphics and it also helps transition them to a more traditional text. Thank you Dusty Higgins for enlightening us with all the new and awesome digital art techniques.  We also appreciate all the books you signed and gifted us!!!!!!

Dorris Curtis Scholarship Raffle:

Thank you Susan Peterson for donating 2 ceramic paint brush holders. Karen Samuhel was the lucky winner of the raffle.

Art of the Month:

Nathan Terry’s artwork “Broken” was voted for and selected as art of the month. Nathan is a new member at the Conway League of Artists.  His art was a shadow box displaying unique and different items that were broken and unusable. Everything was painted in cohesive metallics. Nathan’s artwork can be viewed at the Faulkner County Library.

Demonstration Program:

Sheila Parsons taught the members a lesson on figure drawing.  She explained the correct measurements and details to use when drawing a person.  We learned that most models should be around 7 heads tall, feet are the same size of the face, and she taught us many other guidelines.  The members participated in the demo and we had live models.  Our sketches varied in time from 30 seconds to the last one lasting 15 minutes.  Becoming more relaxed and quicker when sketching was the goal.  Thank you so much Ms. Elizabeth and Mr. Richard for being our live models.  Sheila Parsons is such a skilled and talented artist.  We greatly appreciated your devoted time, knowledge, and supplies for the Conway League of Artists.

Thank you Dema for donating a beautiful paintings for the raffle.  Virginia Potter Vredeveld won the raffle which was a painting donated by Dema Clark.  Thank you ladies for support towards future artists.

  • The league would appreciate any wonderful art pieces donated from our members for the Dorris Curtis Fund.

Art of the Month:

Janetta Darley was chosen as artist of the month.  She had a wonderful pencil drawing of a pumpkin, pine cone, and other fall items that was so detailed it  looked like a photograph. The title is The Fall Menagerie and is absolutely breathtaking.  Janetta Darley works from home and has commissioned her art work for forty years.  Thank you for sharing your amazing masterpiece with us.
